    The reality is that posting your content, running groups, and teaching to a general audience can expose your business to all kinds of sticky drama that could lead to confusion, disgruntlement, and (in the worst cases) legal actions.

    Your Mini-Disclaimer is a self-defense paragraph that packs a powerful punch. It tells people what you DO and, more importantly, what you DON’T do. It lets everyone know what capacity you are working in so they are aware that the information and education you are giving them isn’t supposed to be a substitute for individualized advice from a licensed professional (like a doctor/nurse/therapist/CPA, etc.).

    1. Group Rules / Description

    In the group rules/description on your Facebook groups. Type out the full paragraph of your Mini-Disclaimer into the sidebar of your page.

    2. Pre-Screening Questions

    3. Pinned Post

    1. Know your Audience

    Before you start writing, you want to have a firm understanding of who you’re writing for. If you’re blogging for fun or as a hobby, this may not be important. But if you’re writing for your business, then you should have a dream client in mind. And you want to have a firm understanding of things like:

    • How old are they?
    • What are they like?
    • What’s their typical day like?
    • What would make their life easier?
    • What frustrates them?

    These are just some of the questions you want to ask to define your ideal client. Knowing exactly how to identify your ideal client allows you to better communicate with them. Your writing will be more comprehensive, address their pain points, and speak to their specific wants and needs.

    2. Address Their Needs As It Relates to Your Offers

    If your ideal client is struggling to lose weight, we know a couple of ways to address that is by learning to eat well and move more. Great! You know their needs. Now, you offer coaching on nutrition, but exercise isn’t in your wheelhouse. So, write about things like portion control, meal planning, or the right foods to eat and foods to avoid. Don’t write about CrossFit, pilates, or HIIT training if those topics aren’t aligned with your products or services.

    For one thing, you’ll come across an ingenuine. Secondly, if your reader reaches out to you with questions, will you be able to answer them? Third, while those topics can help them achieve the transformation they’re looking for, you may not have the know-how or offerings to support that aspect of their journey.

    Think of it this way. If you’re a yoga instructor, does it make sense to write about swimming? Probably not. Your post content should address your audience’s needs and align with your expertise and how you can help them.

     

    3. Choose Your Keywords

    What’s a keyword? It’s a word that best describes the content in your blog post. Why do you want one? It’s good for SEO (search engine optimization), which is important because when people search for your keyword, you want them to find your post.

    For example, if your post is about “easy low-carb recipes,” your keywords could be precisely that. If it’s about “3-ingredient healthy desserts,” then those can be your keywords.

    A keyword discussion goes beyond the scope of this post, but suffice it to say, when you choose your keyword, make sure to include it or similar words more than once in your post.

    4. Add Your Voice

    If your content is about tips for adding more vegetables to your diet, you’ll find hundreds of other posts on that same topic. So, how do you make yours different from all the rest? By making sure you add your voice to your writing.

    As you’re reading this post, you probably get a sense of how I like to write or “talk.” It’s a little more casual and conversational, but still informative. You might be even more conversational than I am or include expletives. That’s fine! You want your voice to come out to attract the right people who get you and want to work with or buy from you.

    5. Share Your Story

    Along the same lines, to take it further, personalize your blog post. How? By adding your story. If your post is about how to eat well when you go out to a restaurant, then include an example of a struggle you had when you went out to eat. Or talk about a situation a client had, and how you helped them solve it.

    Sharing your story helps your reader relate more to you and differentiates your writing from everyone else’s.

     

    6. Include Internal and External Links

    Both internal and external links are useful for SEO and will help your post rank higher in a google search. (This means when someone searches for a topic you’re writing about, your post will show up higher in the search results.)

    •  Internal Links

    Internal links serve two purposes. They keep readers on your website longer, which is great SEO. It signals to google or other search engines like Pinterest that your content is worth reading.

    But you don’t want to link to any old post or page on your website. Your links should go to related content that supports your post, gives the reader more info about the topic, or points them to an offer you have that helps them move to the next step. In other words, it adds more value to your reader.

    • External Links

    Like internal links, external links should take your reader to more related or supporting info on another website. The best kind of external links are ones to authority sites or posts on high-authority or reference sites (e.g., FDA, AMA, WebMD) or published studies or statistics (e.g., American Journal of Medicine). This helps your blog post rank higher because it tells Google that you’re referencing trusted websites.

     

    7. Make Your Blog Post Easy to Read

    Do you like reading really long paragraphs? Or posts that look like they go on and on forever like a book report? Most people don’t when they’re reading online. And with more and more people reading content on their phones, it’s even more important to break up your text so that it’s more appealing and less strain on the reader.

    10 Tips for a More Readable Blog Post

    Make it easier for your audience to read what you have to say with these simple tips.

    1. Write short paragraphs
    2. Use bullet points
    3. Break up text with images
    4. Use a dark font on a white or very light background
    5. Choose a font that’s easy to read. If you have to use a script or decorative font, use it sparingly and only in the titles.
    6. Set your font size to 12 points or higher
    7. Use headers and sub-headers
    8. Bold or italicize text you want to emphasize
    9. Insert relevant quotes
    10. Pull out key phrases and highlight them separately

     

    8. Check and Double-Check Your Writing

    I see this way too often – blog posts with spelling errors, improper grammar, and hard-to-read paragraphs. If your post has one or even two mistakes, your reader may not even notice it. But if it has several errors, it doesn’t put you in the best light, and it certainly doesn’t present a high-quality blog post.

    There are easy fixes for that. Use tools like spell check, Grammarly, and HemingwayApp to check and double-check your work. The latter two can also highlight parts of your writing that are too wordy or use words that can be difficult to understand.

    9. End with a Call to Action

    Have you ever read a post and gotten all the way to the end and thought, okay, what next? When you leave out a call to action, your reader is left with that precise thought. So, give them what they’re looking for – a next step, or a call to action, aka CTA.

    CTA Examples

    Your call to action could be any of the following.

    • An invitation to book a call with you to learn more about how you can help them with the content you covered in your post.
    • An offer to grab a free downloadable related to the post.
    • A sentence or two about you, your products and services, and how to reach you.
    • A suggestion to read a related post or go to a relevant page on your website.
    • A directive to leave a comment or question in the comments section.

    Whichever you choose, just don’t leave them hanging.

    Businesses provide guidance and mentorship to their apprentice, who works 10 hours a week during their 3-month apprenticeship. Next, the business accepts an ideal candidate and begins the onboarding process with the apprentice.

    • Provide some structure for your apprentice. Have a list of daily and/or weekly tasks for them to work on.
    • Make sure they know how to get started on the tasks. Allow for them to make mistakes, especially in the beginning, when they’re still finding their way around.
    • Set up a regular check-in time every week, and be available if they have questions or run into difficulties.
    • Offer constructive feedback. If you have additional resources, consider making them available to them.
    • Keep communication open and address questions and issues as they come up.
    • If they’re doing a great job, let them know!

    Jasmine’s Tips

    • Give your apprentice opportunities to learn how to do multiple things.
    • Ask for their opinions on things and take in their input.
    • Explain everything carefully so that apprentices learns from you.

    Drithi’s Tips

    • Understand what your apprentices want from you.
    • Give them room to make mistakes.
    • Don’t be afraid to ask for help on any tasks – if you feel overwhelmed with a bunch of work, delegate the easy tasks to your apprentices. Or make a video on how to go about a particular task. Sometimes, all students want is to keep learning new things!
    • Get to know them and their work. I know apprenticeships are meant to be formal, but if you develop a personal relationship with them, it puts you both at ease.
    • You can play their strengths to your advantage if you know what kind of tasks they’d be good at and where they might need training.

    Your ideal customer avatar is simply your dream client. Also known as your ICA, buyer persona, or ideal client, it’s the key to your success and impact in your content marketing and most other aspects of your business. And knowing who they are, from their demographics to their likes and dislikes, helps you talk directly to the right people. When you can do this, you significantly increase the likelihood they will resonate with your message. So, the more you know about your ICA, the more easily you can create relevant content designed just for them.

    Now that you understand why you need to know your ideal client let’s look at how to create your ideal customer avatar.

    What questions should I ask?

    This vision of your ideal client should guide everything you do, from pricing to branding to content marketing. To develop ideas for your content, you want to know the answers to the following questions. And you want to be as descriptive with your answers as possible to help spark creative ideas for your content.

    Some businesses have more than one, so create as many avatars as you see fit to define the various personas you want to speak to. As you go through the list, more questions may come to mind, so go ahead and add them. Your goal is to create a well-rounded view of your ideal customer avatar.

    But before we get to the questions, keep in mind, you can’t get this wrong. In fact, your ICA can change throughout the lifetime of your business. In addition, not all these questions will apply to you. Nor do you have to answer every single one. This is not a test. It’s a guide to help you better understand who you aim to serve so that you can better address them with your copy and content.

    So, take a stab at answering the following questions the best you can for now. You can, and should, always come back to refine or make changes as your business grows. And as you create your content, come back to your answers to make sure what you’re creating speaks directly to your ICA.

     

    Your Ideal Customer’s Demographics

    Let’s start with the basics, their demographics.

    1. What’s their name?
    2. How old are they?
    3. What is their household income?
    4. What’s their level of education? High school, college, post-college?
    5. Do they work? What do they do? Are they full-time, part-time, self-employed?
    6. Where are they located?
    7. What’s their gender, race, body, etc., if applicable.
    8. Describe their family life, if applicable. Household size, married, children?

    Your Ideal Customer’s Personality

    Now that you have some basic statistics, let’s add a bit of personality to your ICA.

    1. Are they snarky, sarcastic, extroverted, fun-loving and loud, introverted, or quiet?
    2. What are some things that make them happy?
    3. Who are they following on social media? Which ones are they interacting with?
    4. Where else do they hang out online? Forums, groups?
    5. What favorite websites do they visit, talk about, recommend?
    6. Who are they following on TV, music, podcasts?
    7. Where do they get their information?
    8. Write some general adjectives that come to mind to describe your avatar.

    Okay, you have your statistics and personality mapped out. That’s a great start! Now let’s get into your ICA’s lifestyle and habits.

    1. What does their typical weekday look like? Routines and tasks?
    2. On weekends, what do they like to do?
    3. What things do they do to relax and unwind?
    4. What do they do when they have a moment to themselves?
    5. What’s something that they love to do in their spare time?
    6. What objects or things do they have around them in their daily life? On their desk? In specific rooms? In their car? In their purse?
    7. What are they wearing on a typical day at work and at home?
    8. What products or services do they invest in and talk about?
    9. Describe their ideal online shopping experience (or offline if you’re a brick and mortar business).
    10. When they go to grab a guilty pleasure snack, what are some foods they might pick?

     

    Your Ideal Customer’s Goals and Wants As It Relates to Your Business

    By now you should have a pretty good idea of who your ideal client is. Next, let’s dive into what they’re looking to do, keeping in mind how how your products or services can help them get there.

    1. When they look over their life, what are some things they think about?
    2. What would make their life easier?
    3. What’s a goal they might have for themselves?
    4. What’s a win in their book?

     

    Your Ideal Customer’s Struggles and Needs As It Relates to Your Business

    Here’s where you discover your ideal client’s “pain points” and frustrations. Your answers to the following questions can help you create copy that shows you understand what they’re struggling with.

    1. What need has your ideal client expressed?
    2. What is currently frustrating them?
    3. What do they struggle with?
    4. What are they “tired of?”
    5. What do they most often complain or ask about?
    6. What keeps them up at night?
    7. What are they trying to figure out?
    8. What do you think is their #1 pain point?
    9. What things have they not quite figured out how to do yet?
    10. What prevents them from reaching their goals?
    11. What’s something they’re doing “wrong?”
    12. What are some reasons they haven’t yet found what they need?
    13. If your product or services didn’t exist, where else would they go to get it?
    14. What solutions or products have they tried before?
    15. What trends are they hopping on?

     

    Your Ideal Customer’s Experience With You

    The next set of questions will help you paint a picture of the kind of experience you want your dream client to have when they see your content, interact with you, work with you, and use your products and services.

    1. What social media platforms are they on?
    2. When they look at your brand visually, what’s something that would “stand out” and catch their eye?
    3. When they scroll social media and come across your profile or feed, how do you want them to feel?
    4. How do they typically feel BEFORE doing business with you?
    5. How do you want your ideal customer to feel after they do business with you?
    6. What are some one-liners or one-sentence statements they would say after having a positive experience with you?

     

    Turn Your Answers into Content

    Once you’ve painted a well-rounded picture or your ideal customer avatar, including their pain points, you’ll have a powerful tool ready to use. With this information, you can create content, write sales copy, and define your programs and service offerings. When you’re able to help your clients overcome their most painful issues — whether it’s a fear of failure or a lack of self-confidence — you instantly become a more valuable resource in your niche.

    And when you incorporate those same pain points in your content marketing and sales copy, your conversions can dramatically increase. Using your answers as a keyword guide and having a face and a name to think of during all your brainstorming can help you create content that resonates with your ideal customer avatar.

    As you continue to create content, regularly refer back to your ICA. Use it as a reminder for whom you are creating content and products. Ask yourself, is this relevant to my ideal client’s needs, frustrations, and struggles.

    This documentary really helped me realize that what we do has an effect on the future generation of aspirational business women, too. While interviewing women in the tech industry, the directors made sure to highlight the struggles as well as how motivating their journey were.
